Even though the Pima County Board of Supervisors is on record against mining in Davidson Canyon and in the Santa Rita Mountains, it will be up to Congress to change the Mining Law of 1872 to ensure changes are made in how this country mines its natural resources. So says Pima County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard Elias http://ondemand.azpm.org/videoshorts/watch/2009/8/5/kuat-mining-in-davidson-canyon/?q=davidson
As much as things change, they stay the same. In Arizona population has grown and waned based on the price and availability of material mined from the ground. The debate still rages about the highest and best use of our natural resources. http://ondemand.azpm.org/videoshorts/watch/2009/5/28/kuat-davidson-canyon-mine/?q=davidson

The proposed Rosemont Copper Mine in the Santa Rita Mountains about 30 miles SE of Tucson has been causing controversy for months. Augusta Resource Corporation, a Canadian company, wants to mine millions of pounds of copper and other minerals on its private land but also needs to use about 4-thousand acres of US Forest Service property. Augusta says the operation is expected to have a lifespan of 18.2 years and contribute about $250 Million to the local economy every year. But opponents say the environmental degradation, use of groundwater, decline in tourism and other concerns will outweigh the economic benefits. For example, the mining operation plans to use about 1.9 billion gallons of water per year although officials say they'll recharge it.
The fight over the proposed Rosemont Mine in the Santa Rita Mountains is moving into Congress. http://ondemand.azpm.org/videoshorts/watch/2007/2/20/kuat-federal-rosemont-mine/?q=rosemont |
