TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - A white truck heading westbound on Interstate 10 caught fire Thursday night, dangerously close to an 18-wheeler loaded with mining explosives, officials said.
The truck fire happened right near the Twin Peaks exit, where construction of the interchange and a lack of emergency lanes hampered the emergency response.
That prompted a 'Full Alarm' hazardous material situation, Northwest Fire spokesman Cpt. Adam Goldberg said.
Parts of Marana were minutes away from being evacuated because of the proximity of the explosives and the potential for them to ignite, Goldberg said.
Authorities are not clear as of Thursday night whether the white truck caught fire as a result of mechanical failure or some kind of collision.
The driver of the white truck suffered serious burns and had to be airlifted. He later died from the injuries at about 8:30 p.m., Goldberg said.
Rescuers had a difficult time getting to the scene of the fire because of the Twin Peaks interchange construction, Goldberg said.
Officers with the Department of Public Safety nearly began an evacuation of the area within a 1/4 mile radius of the fire because of the explosives potentially igniting.
Goldberg said the rig was carrying '1.4 grade' mining explosives.
All traffic has been restored to normal in the area.
