Wildflowers could be great, thanks to our 2+ inches of rain A devastating drought had destined this spring's bloom to be a monumental bust - and then the rains came. Experts say perennial wildflowers "could be great," thanks to more than 2 inches of rain in January, and annuals such as poppies might manage at least a modest bloom. "We were looking at an absolute loser of a year, with nothing in the way of wildflowers," says Russ Buhrow, curator of plants at Tohono Chul Park. "Now, with the rains we've had, we could have something pretty nice." We asked Buhrow and Mark Dimmitt, director of natural history at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, to brief us on our blooming future. Our report also includes a quick-look guide to germination, ideal conditions for wildflowers, and places where you could find some color this year. Arizona Daily Starchanges policy regarding the commenting portion of Rosemont related articles??? Reply from the ADS: "Editors decide on which threads comments are permitted. Currently we do not allow comments on local crime stories and now Rosemont. We have posted warnings on the Rosemont threads reminding posters to abide by the rules to no avail. The most egregious problems are frivolous reporting, name calling, fake names and multiple logons. Because of these rule-breakers, comments have been suspended on this topic." The Pima Animal Care Center will stay open later for walk-in services.
The center, at 4000 N. Silverbell Road, is now open weekdays from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a news release issued by the Pima County Health Department.
The center's telephone licensing hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
The new hours, which went into effect Sunday, are a result of a survey of customers conducted earlier this year, center spokesman Jayne Cundy said.
Walk-in hours are available for county residents looking to license their cats and dogs, adopt pets or pick up lost pets that had been found and brought to the shelter.
